The images seen on TV as a result of the M8.9 earthquake that struck Japan yesterday were riveting. The enormity of the devastations, loss and damage was beyond comprehension. My heart goes out to the Japanese nation and all the people affected by this event.

There seemed no chance for human survival if struck by the tsunami, which swept up everything in its way, including vehicles,  boats, shipping containers and even buildings. All of them bobbled and floated like toys, pushed by the unseen hands of Mother Nature. Seeing the images of the waves tearing up shorelines, flooding vast tracts of agricultural lands, churning the collected debris and picking up more as the water rushed inland, it does something to one’s psyche.

Did you wonder … what would you do in an earthquake or any other disaster if you were at work or other places while the rest of your family were somewhere else? Do you and your family members know what to do, where to go, who to call or how to re-connect with you?

Having been in the field of emergency management for 20 years, I hope you will take this opportunity and be reminded to become better prepared individually, with your family, in your neighbourhood and at work.

My kids call me paranoid and over-protective. I call it common sense.

Don’t just think about being better prepared … DO SOMETHING! Today!
