My sister’s eldest son is getting married next July and has moved out of the house 2 weeks ago while his parents were away. This somewhat unexpected event might have caused my sister to realize that her son is really leaving home … not 9 months from now, not until the newly purchased home is ready, it is done. It is never easy for a parent to let go, especially if the parent / child relationship was a good one.

I think my sister is unconsciously feeling sad about his “departure” from home and the pressure of all the preparation, finances and expectations associated with the wedding can understandably add to everything. But perhaps there is another way to look at this … he has grown up into an independent and responsible person, capable of making his own decisions and more than likely realizing, if not already, how much his parents have done for him. His life is his own, and no matter how much a parent wants to protect or help him, he has to figure out how to live with the choices he made.

My nephew is an AWESOME “kid” – no doubt, he is more worried about his parents than the other way around. So, there is no need to add pressure to each other. I know, however, letting go is easy said than done!
